Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 disaster has created full drama, and now the legendary Ricky Ponting has dropped a big retirement hint that shocked fans. After Australia’s poor show and early exit, Ponting openly predicted major changes are coming in the T20 team.
Glenn Maxwell’s T20 future in serious doubt
But the biggest talking point was the five-time World Cup winner’s clear and bold prediction that Glenn Maxwell is unlikely to play till the 2028 T20 World Cup. Maxwell had a forgettable T20 World Cup 2026. In three matches, he scored only 62 runs and failed to pick up even a single wicket.
The seasoned all-rounder is known for his explosive batting and match-winning performances, but he was their huge disappointment at this event. Ponting feels Maxwell’s T20I career is now reaching its final stage, and he is unlikely to play in the next ICC events.

Australia is all set to co-host the 2028 T20 World Cup with New Zealand and is also eyeing a possible spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. So, the team management is already thinking about the future, and Ponting believes that some senior names could still be around.
Senior stars still in long-term plans says Ricky Ponting
Speaking on the ICC Review, the legendary Australian batter believes that “Mitchell Marsh, Travis Head, and Josh Inglis” will be around the next three or four years in the T20I side. Ponting also mentioned how Steve Smith has been very vocal about playing at the Olympics. Though, the legendary cricketer said, “Whether or not that happens is a different story.”
Ricky Ponting further noted that Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, and Cooper Connolly are also future options. Ponting said, “Cameron Green will be around if in fact his form is good enough to stay in the side. That’s another bit of a worry, I think, for Australia, certainly across Test match cricket and probably T20 cricket, what we saw in this World Cup.”

I don’t think I will be there: Ricky Ponting on Glenn Maxwell
Speaking about Glenn Maxwell, Ponting boldly said that the all-rounder is unlikely to be part of Australia’s T20I team until the 2028 T20 World Cup. He added, “I don’t think I will be there. I think it looks to me like his career is coming towards an end.
Marcus Stoinis would also probably be a question mark, but he’s predominantly playing only T20 cricket tournaments around the world these days. Doesn’t play a lot of state cricket and obviously plays the BBL, so with his all-around ability, he might be there.”
But Ricky Ponting was hopeful about Matthew Kuhnemann staying there for a long time if Australia opts for two spinners in future tournaments.
The Aussie great Ricky Ponting further added, “So, there will be some change. Matthew Kuhnemann is young enough to still be around as well if they decide to have two spinners in their lineups. So, there could be some changes, but I guess, I mean, we’re still, what are we, 18 months away from that, two years away from that happening. So, let’s wait and see.”
