In this post I explore whether or not the Cape Peninsula is the best scenic drive in the world. There are many contenders to such a coveted title and this blog shows why the Cape Peninsula is so highly rated. No visit to Cape Town would be complete without going for a drive around the Cape Peninsula.
For most people, a tour of the peninsula starts and finishes in Cape Town. There are about 100 miles of spectacular scenery as the road twists one way, turns another, and at times teeters along the edge of the mountains, the wild Atlantic crashing into the cliffs below. Wildlife encounters are plentiful and add an intriguing layer of curiosity to the drive. The rugged and dramatic mountain range meets the ocean in such a way that it captured our hearts, leaving us speechless at times.
Still finding our way in South Africa with many warnings about safety, we went for a luxurious approach to exploring the Cape Peninsula by booking a private tour through our hotel concierge. Our fears of safety far outweigh our ability to drive the roads. South Africa is the same as the UK – drive on the left hand side of the road. The favourable rate in local currency to the English pound offered us excellent value for money. Less than £100 for the both of us meant we were chauffeured all day in our own vehicle with a driver which included all fees and fuel.
Would hiring a car and doing it ourselves worked out cheaper? Would we have known where to go and where to stop? Probably not. Was it a relaxing experience? Most definitely. Had we not got on with our guide perhaps our experience would have been different. In a country that relies heavily on tourism for its economy one can’t begrudge paying for these activities and supporting the local economy.
